so today was constitution day, and today at school we had speakers get up and talk about the constitution specifically the right to vote. well guess who got asked to speak, Yeah it was me, big suprise there i mean you all know i dont shut up some times. anyway i just thought it would be cool of me to post my little speech so you could all be cool like the people who heard me on campus today. here it is enjoy everyone!
My senior year of high school my democracy teacher gave a homework assignment unlike any other I have ever had. The assignment was to register to vote. Compared to the papers and projects I was used to this seemed quite an easy task, fill out a paper, sign it and turn it in. I didn't even have to mail it; my teacher took care of that. Could there be an easier assignment?
Unlike most homework as soon as you finish the work you are done with that assignment forever this one is a little different. When you become a registered voter it should be taken as a life long commitment. Registering to vote is only half the assignment, you have to actually go out and do it. Voting to me is a power, which we all have the ability to use; we just have to choose to use it.
People often say "Why should I vote, I'm just one person, my vote couldn't possibly matter"
Well let me ask you this how many of us have had to scrounge around for change in our cars to pay for gas, or that late night trip to Taco Bell? We search high and low for every last penny we can find just to get enough for that taco at 3am. Well just like those pennies that don't seem to have much value by themselves, added together they get us our late night snack, just like our one vote may not seem like it matters. But added together with the votes of others it can get us what we want, only this time instead of a taco at 3am, it's a leader or a say on an important issue.
That same teacher from high school once said that every American has the ability to overthrow the government if they so choose. You can do this every time there is an election. You go in cast your vote and that is your little rebellion. Now this does seem a little strange but it is true. If you don't like the way the government is doing something then you have the ability to influence the change of the government.
Voting is something I am very passionate about, I think everyone should do it, they have the right and it is pure stupidity to let that right go to waste. It is very easy for someone to sit around and complain all day about how the government is doing this or that, well the easiest way to change that is to get up and vote for a change.
I would like to leave you with one last thought: "Don't be one of those people that sit back and complain all day about how they disapprove of the government. Get up and do something about it; vote; change leadership, when you have made the effort to do that, then you have earned the right to complain.
